Beautify. Unify. Simplify.
Beautify. Unify. Simplify.
The Wayne Residents Committee and Wayne School PTW are teaming up with the Illinois Prairie Path to participate in their 2024 Earth Day Clean Up event. We will be responsible for making sure that the Illinois Prairie Path is cleaned of any litter from Smith Road to Dunham Rd.
The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970. It was created by a US Senator from Wisconsin to bring awareness to environmental issues. The theme of this year's Earth Day is Planet vs. Plastics.
The Illinois Prairie Path is a non-profit organization which was formed by a group of volunteers in 1963. The path itself is the old Right-of-Way of the Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Electric Railway. Construction of the railway was started in 1900. The Village of Wayne sits on the Elgin Branch which was opened for service in Spring 1903. This route supported both freight and passenger trains. Financial issues and declining ridership forced the railroad to cease operations in 1959. In the 1960s, the Aurora Corporation of Illinois began selling off the railroad Right of Way and the Illinois Prairie Path was born. Wayne has two of the 10 miles of the Elgin Branch of the Illinois Prairie Path.
We are hosting a fun-filled event for the Wayne community that is about more than picking up trash. The Dupage County Forest Preserve has donated wildflower seeds to spread along the Prairie Path. We will have tables with Earth Day crafts, activities and games for kids, a plant/seed swap and with a little luck some really nice weather. If you would like to volunteer to clean up the path, Dupage County and the Illinois Prairie Path asks people to please sign up at this link. https://ipp.org/cleanup/
If you want to sponsor an activity table or require additional information about the event, please contact us at WayneResidentsCommittee@gmail.com. If you would like to make a donation, we would welcome seeds, seedlings, plants or anything Earth Day related to give away. If you just want to come out, meet some neighbors and enjoy the day, bring your dogs, your bikes and your love of nature.
